RAT FARM CLOSED
Phoenix, Arizona
June 4, 2019
Neighbors alerted authorities to the home of 58-year-old Cris Kirkwood and Ruth Wilson after finding rats equipped with wireless cameras roaming their homes. The cameras were strapped to the rodents back using custom harnesses.
Inside the Kirkwood/Wilson residence police confiscated hundreds of hours of video recorded from the rats in locations throughout the city.
Authorities said the recordings were then shared and traded within a network of online remote rodent voyeurs. Top price was paid for footage captured by the rodents of sexual acts and of local celebrities. There may be over one thousand potential victims of the rat farm surveillance system and authorities continue to identify victims on the recordings.
The couple had a complete breeding and training program setup in the backyard of their North 2nd Avenue Phoenix Home. Inside an aluminum shed over 200 rodents which were then euthanized and then laid out on the couples front lawn.
Alleged victims became suspicious when the couple visited their neighboring homes. Bread crumb trails were found after either Wilson or Kirkwood paid a visit. Those trails almost always led to the master bedroom of the victim homes. Both Kirkwood and Wilson were said to be carrying large bags and where the victims suspect the rodents were covertly brought into the homes and let free.
Cris Kirkwood went so far as to write a song about their exploits which was recorded and published by his band, The Meat Puppets. The song tells of a rat farm in your town where the rodents invade your homes and implies that they watch you during intercourse.
Kirkwood and Wilson refused to comment on the charges. Authorities said the rat farm is closed permanently and district attorneys are still working on what crimes Kirkwood and Wilson could face.
